On May 28, 2024, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) announced the initiation of the Climate Resiliency Initiative. This initiative aims to preserve the city’s waterfront historic areas by improving the speed and effectiveness of Landmarks’ response to future extreme weather events caused by climate change that will affect New York City’s waterfront historic resources.

HPD Celebrates Opening of 375 Affordable Unit Development in Greenpoint
On April 3, 2024, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the New York City Housing Development Corporation, elected officials and project partners celebrated the opening of 35 Commercial Street, a new affordable residential development that is part of Greenpoint Landing in Brooklyn. Greenpoint Landing is a 22-acre site along the East River waterfront that is being master-planned and developed by Park Tower Group, and is expected to have 5,500 total residential units once completed.
City Breaks Ground on Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center in Staten Island
On February 23, 2024, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner Thomas Foley, and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) Commissioner Sue Donoghue broke ground on the new $92 million Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center in Tompkinsville, Staten Island.

City Announces Expansion of Harlem River Greenway to the Bronx
On March 22, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to expand the Harlem River Greenway to the Bronx. Greenways are linear open spaces on public land available for pedestrian and cycling use and provide communities access to greenery. The expanded route will provide communities in the west Bronx with access to the waterfront via off-street paths and on-street bike facilities. The route will expand to seven miles, connecting Randall’s Island to Van Cortlandt Park.
City Council Passes “Halletts North” Housing Project
On September 29, 2022, the City Council approved a rezoning for the Halletts North development in Astoria, Queens. The mixed-use development, located at the intersection of 27th Avenue and 3rd Street, consists of three towers with 46,509 square feet of waterfront public access area along the East River.
