Orange County Legislature Fails to Advance New Map
The Orange County Legislature failed to advance three county legislative draft maps to the public hearing stage after a meeting on July 26th lost its quorum of legislators necessary to move the maps to the next stage. The county needs to have a new map in place before petitioning for the 2025 primary gets underway next year.
On June 20, 2024, the New York City Council passed Int. 904 A. This legislation requires the Department of Buildings (DOB) to establish a proactive inspection program aimed at identifying hazardous building conditions. On June 24, 2024, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) announced the completion of $383 million in renovations for 16 Manhattan developments. The changes were made as part of the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program, which changes developments from the traditional public housing assistance model to the federally-funded Section 8 program, while tenants still retain the original rights they had under traditional public housing. On June 6, 2024, the City Council voted to approve the City of Yes for Economic Opportunity zoning text amendment. The amendment is one of three City of Yes zoning text amendments proposed by the Adams administration to address outdated provisions within the zoning text that unnecessarily restrict or limit housing, the implementation of green technology and infrastructure, and economic development.
On June 12, 2024, the City Council Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection held a public hearing on Int. 360, sponsored by Council Member Chi A. Ossé. The bill, known as the FARE (Fairness in Apartment Rental Expenses) Act, ensures that the party hiring a broker, whether tenant or landlord, is responsible for paying the broker.
