Parks Dept Reports Record-Breaking Mulchfest Season
On January 17, 2023, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced the results of the most recent Mulchfest, where the agency collected live Christmas trees that were recycled into mulch to be used for mulching plant beds and community gardens across the city. According to the agency, 58,309 trees were collected for this year’s Mulchfest.
Landmarks Designates Julius’ Bar
On December 6, 2022, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to designate Julius’ Bar at 159 West 10th Street in Greenwich Village as an Individual Landmark. While the building is already located within the Greenwich Village Historic District, the designation of Julius’ Bar recognizes the importance of the location as part of LGBTQ+ history.

Christopher Columbus is in trouble. Political pressure to remove Columbus monuments most recently dates from 1992 during the preparations for the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s first voyage. The movement to remove the monuments accelerated in the summer of 2020 following the murder of George Floyd.
Mayor, Small Business Services Appoint Dasheeda Dawson as Cannabis NYC Director
As the initiative’s founding director, Dawson will serve as the primary liaison between SBS, other city agencies, and key stakeholders. On October 12, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams and Small Business Commissioner Kevin Kim announced the appointment of Dasheeda Dawson as founding director of the City’s new Cannabis NYC initiative.
