The program expands on a Queens pilot program that diverted 12.7 million pounds of compostable material from landfills. On January 17, 2023, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced the results of the most recent Mulchfest, where the agency collected live Christmas trees that were recycled into mulch to be used for mulching plant beds and community gardens across the city. DOT Announces “Trick or Streets” To Use Open Streets for Safe Halloween Activities
On October 31, 2022, almost 100 of the City’s Open Streets and pedestrian spaces will be open for safe Halloween activities to provide children with an opportunity to have fun on car-free streets. Through the Department of Transportation and community partners, open streets will be available from 4 to 8 pm on Halloween night through the “Trick or Streets” program.

The Mayor’s office has invested $23 million across three acres of NYCHA open space.
