On August 8, 2024, Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, in collaboration with critical stakeholders and community members, celebrated the reopening of the newly renovated Orchard Beach Nature Center in Pelham Bay Park.
The reconstruction project improvements included new public restrooms, upgrades to plumbing and electrical systems, and renovation of the center’s interior. This project also installed a new ADA-accessible ramp to access the center. This $2.35 million project was funded by the New York City Mayor’s Office.
Since 1986, the Orchard Beach Nature Center has hosted educational programs led by Urban Park Rangers. These programs consist of displays and live marine creatures from Long Island Sound to teach patrons about wildlife and nature at Pelham Bay Park.
The newly renovated Orchard Beach Nature Center will continue to offer programming led by Urban Park Rangers and be used for overnight camping programs at Orchard Beach.
New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue said, “The upgrades to Orchard Beach Nature Center enhance the visitor experience at New York City’s largest park, providing a state-of-the-art facility for public programming and environmental education. Our nature centers serve as hubs for learning, offering workshops for the entire family and educational displays that foster a deeper connection with the natural world. Along with the ongoing reconstruction of the historic Orchard Beach pavilion, Parks is committed to improving amenities at Pelham Bay Park to ensure all New Yorkers have access to world-class public greenspaces.”
