In February 2017, Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Frederick Schaffer as the Chair of the City’s Campaign Finance Board. The Board, which will be thirty years old next year, is responsible for enforcing New York City’s campaign finance law, monitoring campaign contributions and disclosures, overseeing the public matching funds program and enforcing the rules. Schneiderman Announces New Legislation to Criminalize Tenant Harassment

Attorney General Schneiderman announces new legislation to crack down on rent regulated tenant harassment. On May 24, 2017, New York State Attorney General Eric. T. Schneiderman introduced the Tenant Protection Act of 2017. The new legislation is aimed at providing a criminal crack down landlords who harass their tenants. The legislation will be sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Joseph Lentol, and is another step in the Attorney General’s work regarding this topic.


Gramercy Park SRO used as Hotel Ruled Unlawful

Owner of eight-story building had been used as a hotel since the 1950’s. An eight-story building located at 225 E 17th Street in Manhattan, was operated as a transient hotel with 155 rooms. Buildings charged that the hotel use was in violation of the building’s certificate of occupancy which specified single room occupancy with 163 single rooms and one community kitchen.  Buildings relied on the certificate of occupancy issued on August 16, 1968.

Planning Commission Okays 206 New Affordable Units in Unionport

The City Planning Commission approved the construction two new joined buildings to contain 206 affordable units in the Unionport neighborhood of the Bronx. On April 5, 2017, the City Planning Commission issued a favorable report on an application from Westchester Mews LLC.
