On August 19, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the $16.5 million contribution to decarbonize and improve existing affordable housing in New York City through the Resilient and Equitable Decarbonization Initiative for Existing Buildings (REDi: EB) Program. This program is administered New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development in partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This program is funded through the State’s Clean Energy Fund (CEF).
Mayor Issues Executive Order for Agencies to Find Suitable Affordable Housing Locations on City-Owned Properties
On August 21, 2024, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the issuance of Executive Order 43, which requires City agencies to review their city-owned and controlled land to determine which sites can be appropriate for potential housing development sites. This order is in response to New York City’s affordable housing crisis. The goal of this executive order is to support the Adam’s administration plan of building 500,000 new homes by 2032.
DEP Appoints New Borough Commissioners for the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island
On August 12, 2024, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection appointed three Borough Commissioners for the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. The Borough Commissioners will serve as chief liaisons for elected officials, stakeholders, and community members to address environmental issues within each borough. They will also help oversee the advancement of capital projects, the monitoring of air and noise issues, and working with local, state and federal agencies as needed.
