DEP Appoints New Borough Commissioners for the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island

On August 12, 2024, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection appointed three Borough Commissioners for the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. The Borough Commissioners will serve as chief liaisons for elected officials, stakeholders, and community members to address environmental issues within each borough. They will also help oversee the advancement of capital projects, the monitoring of air and noise issues, and working with local, state and federal agencies as needed. 

Alfonso Lopez will serve as the Borough Commissioner for Queens. He most recently served as Chief of Staff for the Mayor’s Office of City Legislative Affairs. He previously spent a decade as a legislative assistant in the US House of Representatives, and an Associate Director for Legislative Affairs for the Department of Homeland Security. 

Eleftheria Ardizzone will serve as the Borough Commissioner for the Bronx. Most recently, she served as Deputy Director of Community Affairs at the Department of Environmental Protection, where she has served for almost 20 years working with local, state, and federal government, community groups, and environmental groups. 

Mario Bruno will serve as the Borough Commissioner for Staten Island. Previously, he served as Assistant Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Environmental Protection since 2013.
