On November 8, 2024, New York City Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley announced the completion of a two-year construction project in Bayside, Queens. This project was managed by the Department of Design and Construction on behalf of the Department of Transportation.
This project involved reconstruction of street medians and other street improvements alongside Union Turnpike from 226th Street to Hollis Court Boulevard. There were roughly two miles of curb and 31,700 square feet of local sidewalks upgraded. There were fourteen left turn lanes upgraded, four concrete bus pads renovated, and two unused bus pads removed. There were 41 older pedestrian ramps upgraded to be ADA compliant and 32 new Accessible Pedestrian Signals added. To improve lighting, 20 light poles were upgraded to operate with LED lighting. To improve landscaping near the streets there were seven trees removed, and 53 trees were planted.
New York City Department of Design and Construction said, “This stretch of Union Turnpike is now safer for pedestrians and motorists alike while also looking much nicer with the addition of 46 additional trees. Congratulations to the DDC team that completed this project under budget and on schedule even as they accommodated a request by Con Edison to add more work to the project. Without that request, the team would have been finished nine months ahead of schedule.”
