On Friday, May 9, 2014, the Center for New York City Law, at New York Law School hosted a City Law Breakfast, featuring Mark Peters, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation, as the guest speaker. Commissioner Peter’s speech was entitled, “Corruption Fighting in New York City: The Next Step.” The special sponsor for this CityLaw Breakfast was Guidepost Solutions.
Commissioner Peters was introduced by Ross Sandler, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for NYC Law, and Anthony Crowell, Dean and President of New York Law School. Commissioner Peters stated the core function of the Department is identifying corrupt officials and seeing that they are prosecuted. Peters focused his address on two trends in government oversight. First, the need to provide independent third party review to not only make sure government is honest, but that government properly delivers services to all New Yorkers who need them. Second, that the Department can implement new technology, such as data mapping, to more efficiently find outright corruption.
