On Friday, October 18, 2013 the Center for New York City Law and the Dianne Abbey Law Center for Children and Families at New York Law School hosted the 111th City Law Breakfast. New York Law School and the Centers were honored to have Honorable Judith S. Kaye, former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, as the guest speaker.
Judge Kaye was introduced by Ross Sandler, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for NYC Law. Judge Kaye reflected on her life after serving as Chief Judge of New York at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, pursuing her passion for juvenile justice and other global issues.
Judge Kaye stated that on August 27, 2010, her remarks at the CityLaw Breakfast were entitled “Juvenile Justice Reform: Now is the Moment.” She stated that if she were to put a title on her remarks at the 111th City Law Breakfast, it would be called “Juvenile Justice Reform: Now is Really, Really, Really the Moment.” Judge Kaye focused her talk on the many initiatives and accomplishments addressing juvenile justice and the school-to-prison pipeline happening in recent times, which added up to create an ideal time to push forward and make meaningful changes in this field.
Judge Kaye convened the New York City School-Justice Partnership Task Force to solve issues relating to schools and kids, and keeping them out of courts. The task force released a report report on May 30, 2013 called Keeping Kids In School and Out of Court.
